Muafangejo: Memory and Activism- NAGN foyer exhibition honours John Muafangejo’s legacy

The National Art Gallery of Namibia (NAGN) in collaboration with the Arts Association Heritage Trust (AAHT) and the John Muafangejo Art Centre (JMAC) announced this week that a week-long exhibition in the gallery’s foyer will honour the work and legacy of legendary artist, John Muafangejo.
Titled ‘Muafangejo: Memory and Activism’, it is an exhibition of works by the late Namibian printmaker, John Ndevasia Muafangejo. This exhibition forms part of the John Muafangejo Season, a new project initiated by JMAC to honour the remarkable legacy of John Muafangejo through a programme of community engagements with local and guest art practitioners from the Southern African region.
“The 2016 season from 03 to 07 October is framed as an intersectional dialogue of art, archivism and activism. In remembrance of Muafangejo and his work as sites of activism, this programme is in search of reflective questions that local creative communities should be asking today. This also includes futuristic questions around how we foresee engaging with collective memory and protest art” stated the National Art Gallery. This season endeavours to develop and promote new work geared to socio-cultural activism. It further strives to promote dialogue, share ideas, share information and share skills on relevant contemporary art and curatorial practices in the context of activism and archivism in Africa.
Finally, it is hoped that this dialogue leads to a platform for cultural exchange between art practitioners from the region and beyond.
In addition to the exhibition, the National Art Gallery will host a JMAC ARTiculation Session on Wednesday 05 October 2016 around the theme ‘Muafangejo as memory for protest today’.
Other sessions include a performance by Nyakallo Maleke and Gabi Ngcobo, and two more Articulation Sessions on art and activism. For the final day of the season, a discussion on JMAC’s needs assessment project will be conducted at the Katutura Community Art Centre.
