Perspectives Exhibition – A photographic exhibition by Namibian & Chinese Photographers
Landscapes of high altitudes engulfed in mist such as this Waterfall Cloud in Scissors Gorge in China are some of the pictures with great scenery displayed at the Perspectives exhibition.
The National Art Gallery of Namibia (NAGN) is hosting its latest photographic exhibition, titled Perspectives. It is a photographic journey of imagery from Chinese forests that seem mystical to the eye to the rich cultural landscapes of indigenous Namibian people. The exhibition contains 40 prints and will be on display until 09 July.
If you are the travelling type or even an armchair anthropologist that likes indulging in different human existences with diverse cultural qualities, then these works will entice you to buy them.
The photographic art form captures its subjects in a rather vivid way, bringing a cinematic ambiance to two dimensional photographs.
The exhibition is not only appealing for its picturesque prints, some are printed on large ancient-like Chinese manuscripts made of linen that roll down elegantly. Some of the most notable artists include Chinese photographer William Cui, who showcases his skills by photographing the cultural diversities of the Namibian population. In one of his photographs, Cui skillfully exploits the sunlight by capturing the orange-red tint of an Ovahimba woman’s complexion against the setting sun.
Namibian artist Vilho Nuumbala displays pictures of the social life of another artist, Erna Chimu and her band in vintage black and white. The artist explains “as an urban dweller my focus was more on social life in Windhoek. I followed and photographed bands and artists in live music, capturing special moments even behind stage.”
This exhibition aims to recognize the eye of the photographer, allowing viewers to gaze at the charming continental difference’s between China and Namibia, making it a worthwhile exhibition. Perspectives highlights how images taken by Namibian photographers compare to those taken by Chinese photographers, and how each photographer captures something that is unfamiliar to them.
It would be an impossible task to describe all the awe inspiring photographs and do justice to all the diverse imagery, the monasteries, the ancient Chinese temples, the forbidden cities and the ghostly images of the Namib desert.
The exhibition serves a great concoction of landscape photography by artists who know how to read human faces like novels, capturing the Namibian population in its purest visual form.
