Angolan film traces Tango to Africa

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the film series “African Perspectives”, AfricAvenir celebrates African cinema throughout 2016. The first installment to kick off the celebratory year is an Angolan documentary tracing the roots of popular modern Latin American dances to Africa.
AfricAvenir presents the Namibian premiere of the Angolan documentary “Tango Negro. The African Roots of Tango”, directed by Dom Pedro, Angola, 2013, 93min.
Tango Negro, The African Roots of Tango explores the expression of Tango’s Africanness and the contribution of African cultures in the creation of the tango. Tango was a reflection of the social life of the slaves that were taken to South America mostly Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. The majority of the South American slaves came from central Africa, particularly from the former Kongo Kingdom and from Angola.
Director Dom Pedro reveals the depth of the footprints of the African music on the tango, through this rich movie combining musical performances and interviews from many tango fans and historians in Latin America and Europe, including the renowned Argentinean pianist Juan Carlos.
“The contextual information highlighting the slave trade, as well as the white washing of this musical form, makes Tango Negro very relevant in modern times. ……..This is a must-see documentary for those searching for information about the history of Afro-Latinos in Latin America.” – Huffington Post
