Extractive professors gather at Poly

A large group of academics specialising in the various disciplines of mining earlier this month converged on the Polytechnic of Namibia for the Society of Mining Professors (SOMP) 3rd Regional Conference. Their participation was sponsored by Namdeb diamond company. “Namdeb continues to play a significant role in contributing to skills development. The company recently committed to explore ways which will contribute to capacity building in the mining industry through the institutions of higher learning” said Namdeb General Manager, Riaan Burger. Conference delegates were presented with technical presentations from academic, government and industry professionals on a wide range of topics. Burger gave a presentation on Namdeb’s development projects while the Human Resources Development Manager Dr Lilita Marques facilitated a session on capacity building. The Society of Mining Professors is a platform for academics, researchers, government and mineral industry professionals, to exchange information and views.
