Tafel to sponsor four O’s regional football tourney

The Namibia Football Association (NFA) struck a deal with the Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) that will see the Tafel Lager Cup competition for the four northern regions of Omusati, Ohangwena, Oshana and Oshikoto.

An ecstatic NFA Secretary General Barry Rukoro said earlier in the week that the competition details were finalized recently and were launched in the week in Ongwediva at the Destiny Hotel.
“This is the first edition of what the NFA envisage to be yet another long-lasting relationship with the longest partner of football in Namibia. The NFA is indeed very pleased that the relationship between Tafel Lager and football is continuing to grow stronger all the time. We call upon the football family in Namibia, particularly in the North to really get behind the competition and support the five events to the maximum,” Rukoro said.
The competition is scheduled to start on the weekend of 5 and 6 December and conclude on the weekend of 12 and 13 December in Oshakati. The first Round of the competition will take place at regional with first and second divisions’ clubs eligible to play and then four regional winners to qualify to the Final Competition in Oshakati.
“Oshakati will then host the semifinals stage of the completion with the eventual champion also to be crowed on December 13. The teams will win lucrative prize-money, trophies and medals while the four regional winners will be clad in branded gear,”explained Rukoro.
Previously, between 2006 and 2008, the Hansa Pilsener Cup was contested by first and second division clubs, involving over 200 clubs with 600 players and 1 800 volunteers. The Namibia Football Consortium invested a total of N$500,000 in the competition, which was played under the banner of the Hansa Pilsener beer brand of the Namibia Breweries Limited. The overall winner received N$90,000, while the runners-up got N$40,000.
