Knowledgeable Mama G’s wisdom

Contrary to the characters that she portrays, ‘Mama G’ is a God-fearing, humble and kind woman with a lot of wisdom. (Photograph by Mandisa Rasmeni)

Patience Ozokwor aka Mama G visited Namibia this week for the latest MTC Master of Success celebration at the National Theatre in Windhoek. True to her image of pervasive wisdom, she wowed the spirited crowed with her charisma and knowledge.

Patience comes from a modest family and after she realised that teaching is not for her, the acting bug got hold of her.
She said at first when she started acting she had no idea the impact she would make on peoples’ lives. “Most of the characters I play are bad, mean or just plain evil and I want to show society that there are woman like that in life,” she said.
A born-again Christian and a mother of four, with the last one being adopted, she sees the need for Africans to tell their own stories and for African children to know their history. She said that she is very grateful for her life and her family because family is very important to her. “Young people this days do not appreciate their family, and they have lost the sense of family, which is very important,” she emphasised.
Responding to a question from the audience on what she would change in her life, she said the arranged marriage. “Do not get me wrong I loved my husband, but I would have loved to finish school and establish myself before I got married,” she said. Patience got married at the age of 21.
She advised the younger generation to be true to themselves and not just follow what the crowed is doing. “Do try and help someone or do something for someone without expecting something in return” she said like and old sage.
Patience will be back in Namibia next year to work on a movie so watch this space.
