Long walk to early cancer detection

Pink outfits and two fluffy dogs made the Spes Bona Properties team capture all the attention at the Cancer Walk in Windhoek over the previous weekend. The Cancer Walk was organised by the Cancer Association with sponsoring partners Spes Bona Properties and Radiowave.

“Awareness remains cardinal in educating and trying to ensure earlier detection. This saves lives and this is what we aimed to achieve with the 2015 Spes Bona Properties & Radiowave Cancer Walk in Windhoek,” said Rolf Hansen, Chief Executive Officer of the Cancer Association of Namibia.

The Cancer Walk was hosted by the Cancer Association of Namibia in collaboration with two anchor donors, Spes Bona Property Brokers and Radiowave 96.74FM, as well as various supporting sponsors. The day drew more than 1000 sympathisers and as the walk progressed, a long line of ambulators crossed the hills of Windhoek’s Olympia suburb.
“By closing date of entries on 16 September 2015 we had 644 entries, with more late requests accepted until Thursday evening,” said Ms Suann Esterhuizen, Project Coordinator for the Cancer Associatioin. “On Saturday morning numerous late entries were welcomed for those who really wanted to enter in support of the fight against cancer and over a thousand Windhoekers participated in the end!”
“We had a goody bag as incentive for the first 500 entries and 1000 medals for all entries by 16 September. But based on past walks, we just did not imagine that over 1000 supporters would come and walk in pink! This shows that Namibians truly have a huge heart for the fight against cancer in Namibia and this inspires us to go bigger and better next year,” said Hansen expressing the association’s gratitude for its sponsors and for every walker.
Enamoured by the success of this event, the Cancer Association immediately started planning this week for next year’s Cancer Walk. It is now the association’s intention to make next year’s Cancer Walk even bigger.
The 2016 Cancer Walk will take place on Saturday, 03 September 2016
