Recruit and train the right people for your franchise

Fanie Steenkamp, FNB Business Segment Head

FNB Namibia recently launched a specialized franchise business unit to support franchise clients in Namibia. In light of this, Fanie Steenkamp, FNB Business Segment Head shares some insights and business tips on franchises.

“There is a growing and more specialised need for franchise operations support, not only financially but also business wise and we wish to assist where we can, albeit with some tips on what to do and what not. We wish to see these businesses grow and prosper, thereby ensuring that they contribute towards the growth of our economy,” Steenkamp said.
He added that the franchising track record proves that as long as the concept is chosen for the right reasons and implemented properly, it will deliver on its promise to be a blueprint for business success.
As a franchise owner, you have a number of elements that make up your business. “Your employees are one of your greatest assets, as they can help make your dream of a successful business a reality. They are an extension of yourself and your vision for your business. It is important to have personnel that you trust and the kind of employees that can ensure the daily operations of your business run smoothly when you’re not there,” said Steenkamp.
How to Start: Have the right mindset
The recruitment of personnel is not something to be taken lightly. It requires your full attention, and if you’re new to the game, it might be advisable to ask for help.
Writing a Job Description
Before you interview anyone, you need to know what kind of an employee you are looking for. Create a job description that identifies the most important qualifications and experience that your ideal candidate should have.
The Interview Process
Now that you have sifted through the mountain of CV’s and identified the best candidates for the job, you will need to be prepared with questions to ask during the interview. Interviewing is a way of verifying and reviewing the information in one’s CV. While conducting the interview, observe the candidates’ body language and how they answer questions. It could be an indication of how they would interact with customers. Before making your final decision, it would be a good idea to have a second round of interviews with the best candidates.
Training a new Employee
Now that you have the right individual for the job, you will need to train them in the ways of your franchise. You hired this person based on their qualifications and expertise, but you will have to give clear and detailed instructions of what needs to be done and how. The objective is to train your new employee so that he/ she fulfils the need that they were hired for. It is a good idea to have a training programme for anyone new that joins the team.
Motivating your staff for optimal results
A way to make sure your business prospers is to make sure your personnel work in an environment that is secure and happy. Set up a work environment that is comfortable for them so that they are happy employees. Have regular meetings with staff so that you can check in with them. This is an opportunity to praise them for good work done and give feedback on work performance that might need to be adjusted. Regular meetings are a way to manage expectations. When you have a business where people want to work, it contributes to the longevity and prosperity of your business. The best thing you can do for your business is to have employees that believe in your dream and vision.
