Cotton On flair ignites Grove fashion spread

Mild chaos was at the order of the day last weekend when fashion retailer Cotton On opened its doors in Windhoek’s Grove Mall on Friday 29 May. This scene shows the crowd of shoppers on Saturday morning browsing for bargains amongst the myriad of fashion items.

Australian retailer the Cotton On Group who claims to be one of the fastest growing fashion retailers globally, expanding its African footprint and opened its first store in Namibia on 29 May in Windhoek’s Grove Mall.

The opening celebrations continued on the Saturday morning when thousands of shoppers with paychecks in their pockets descended on the Grove Mall.
“Born to deliver on-trend, effortlessly cool and affordable fashion” Cotton On said it provides men and women the styles they want now, at the best price. At 1000 square metres, the new Cotton On store at the Grove Mall is the first African country to house the retailer outside of South Africa. The new store will house a number of brands under the Cotton On Group stable, including Cotton On, Cotton On Body, Cotton On KIDS and RUBI Shoes.
With many global fashion retailers making the move from South Africa into the Namibian market and seeing great success, it was an obvious decision for the Australian retailer as its first move into sub-Saharan African. “We have been very fortunate to have seen consistent growth and success in South Africa, with 120 stores already and plans to continue to expand our South African fleet. We constantly look at new regions where we will expand the Cotton On brand, and as Namibia borders South Africa, the Namibian retail market shares many similaraties to that of its neighbour,” said Cotton On Global General Manager, Felicity McGahan.
“After seeing some of our competitors experience strong performance in the Namibian market, we felt it was the right decision for the Group to move into its second African country,” says McGahan.
The Grove was only recently developed, offering a superior shopping experience for the customers that did not previously exist in the market. Thismade it the perfect location for Cotton On to launch into the region. “With the introduction of The Grove Mall in Windhoek, it provided us an opportunity to introduce Cotton On to a new community and export our laidback, quintessential Australian lifestyle to Namibians,” she said.
Since opening their first store in 1991 in Australia, The Cotton On Group has seen rapid growth and now has over 1300 stores across 17 countries, with a commitment to reach more people across the globe.
The Cotton Group started from very humble beginnings in 1991, as a small family-run business based in Geelong, Victoria State in Australia with a big dream and one powerful idea; to deliver great product at a price people can afford. 23 years on the Cotton On Group has grown to more than 1300 stores across nine brands in 17 countries, including 120 stores across South Africa.
