Karatekas shine at SA championships

Participating in the over 75 kg category, Jürgen van Wyk walked away with a gold medal while Sam Ekandjo scooped a silver medal with Rowna Carstens earning himself a respectable bronze medal.

The Namibian team produced a sterling show at the Africa Goju Ryu Karate Federation Championships (AGKF) held in Stellenbosch, South Africa last week.

“We are extremely proud to announce the results obtained by the Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate Namibia team at the Africa Goju Ryu Karate Federation Championships (AGKF),” according to Goju chief instructor, Sensei Carl van der Merwe. According to van der Merwe, there were 430 contestants that participated at this event that was held over two days (15 and 16 May).
Said Van der Merwe, “The Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate Namibia Team won 95 medals consisting of 31 gold medals, 29 silver medals and 35 bronze medals. That means Namibia now has 31 Africa Goju Ryu Karate Federation Champions.”
“Zaviur De Wee was awarded the Africa Grand Champion trophy for his division by obtaining Gold for Kata and Iri Kumite and Bronze for Team Kata. Namibia entered three teams for Team Kata of which one team won Silver and another team won Bronze,” said van der Merwe.
Meanwhile, there are 34 Goju Ryu Karate organisations affiliated to the AGKF.
